對象
Target users
The learning material is primarily prepared for biology
students studying secondary 4 to secondary 6 under the Hong
Kong New Senior Secondary curriculum. Additional
school-based assessment reference for teachers is included
on the "Biology
Field Study Implementation and School-based Assessment
Handbook" series.
背景
Background
Implementation of a three-year senior secondary academic
structure would commence at secondary 4 in September 2009.
Accordingly, a new “Curriculum and Assessment Guide” is
recommended by the Education Bureau for use in secondary
schools, and there is a school-based assessment (SBA)
component constituting part of the public assessment of the
two subjects — Biology and Combined Science.
Under the “School-based Assessment Teachers’ Handbook of
Biology and Combined Science (Biology Part), Hong Kong
Diploma of Secondary Education Examination”, published by
the Hong Kong Examination and Assessment Authority, there
are 5 designated practical related tasks that can be
included in the SBA, namely :
(a) investigatory practical work
(b) microscopic examination
(c) dissection of animals/animal organs
(d) ecology fieldwork
(e) biological drawing
Assessment of task (a) is compulsory and assessment of
either one of the task (b) to (e) will be counted in the
final mark. Besides fulfilling examination requirements,
teachers are also highly recommended to arrange more
practical activities for the students. As a result, an
extra 20 learning hours is allocated by the “Curriculum and
Assessment Guide” for scientific investigation activities.
Being one of the two subsidized field study centres in Hong
Kong, we have the absolute obligation to provide assistance
for the implementation of the new biology curriculum.
Therefore we build this web site.
理念
Rationale
Scientific
investigations
involve
observing
phenomena,
defining problems,
formulating hypotheses, designing
and
conducting
investigations,
and
interpreting
results.
These
kinds
of
activity
are
not
just
for

purposes;
they
also
allow
students
to
understand
the
process of
science,

how

how
to

how

It

Comparison of Investigatory field study and instructional
field study

Time allocation in connection with the NSS biology
curriculum
A total of 270 hours is allocated to cover the NSS Biology
curriculum, of which 86 hours is allocated for the topic
more related to field studies - Organisms and Environment.
Field study is one of the recommended learning activities
Of the 270 hours, 20 hours is allocated for scientific
investigations. The curriculum Guide suggests to use the 20
hours time flexibly to provide opportunity for students to
design and conduct individual or group investigative
project(s).

Course components and procedure
1.
1. Preparation
: Choose field
site/topic. Students are divided into groups of 4-7 members
each. Students should read the relevant information on this
web site first and obtain preliminary knowledge.
Participants should check predicted tide on the web site of
Hong Kong Observatory before choosing seashore field sites
(the tide should be 1.5m or below during the field study
period on 10:30 am to 12:20 pm).
2. Drafting an
investigation plan : Students search and study
relevant information from books, articles and material on
the web, work out details of the investigation, including
methods, equipment required and data recording sheets.
Participating students and teachers should have enough
awareness of the safety precautions of field study.
3. Presentation
investigation plan : Each groups present their
plan to other participating students and teachers. Teachers
and students can give comments and recommendations.
4. Collecting equipment
: Students may bring along
equipment form their own schools, or borrow equipments from
Ho Koon. If equipment is to be borrowed from Ho Koon,
please fill in the borrowing form and fax (24936612) or
email (
) to Ho Koon not less
than 3 days before the field investigation.
5. Field investigation
: 1hour
45 minutes is allowed to stay in the field site.
6. Data analysis :
Students
organize and analyze the data collected from field.
7. Presentation of
findings : Students present their
preliminary findings.
8. Report writing :
A detailed
report is written and submitted to school teacher for
assessment. Student are also required to submit a copy to
Ho Koon (in digital format). The report would be placed in
the digital library for other students as reference.
Here is a link to some outstanding field
study reports.
Procedure 1, 2, 8 are done
in students own school. Procedure 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 are done in
Ho Koon.
